Remember Pierce Brosnan as James Bond 007 in The World is Not Enough (1999)?  He foils a plot to blow up the major trans-Caucasian pipeline.  It was shot, in part, in Azerbaijan, and one of the scenes is an amazing bird’s eye perspective of Bond driving through rusted oil fields .  That’s where I was today, site of my first video report.  Rough around the edges, and the wind makes it difficult to hear, but the images tell the story.

Just a bit of background before you click play. This was one of the world’s first oil fields, certainly the first in this hemisphere.  By the end of the 19th century, Azerbaijan produced more oil than any country except the United States.  Today, most Azerbaijan oil is drilled offshore in the Caspian Sea.  But this field, on the shores of the Caspian, still is up and running with, as you’ll see, not the most modern of equipment.

The weather was dark, the wind howling, the mud several inches thick, and the smell of oil everywhere.  Chingiz did the driving, and Gunay, with some help from Aygun, provide the “history.”
